Guide
How to get your business recommended by AI assistants
More people now ask ChatGPT, Google and their phone''s assistant who to use, instead of scrolling through pages of links.
Those tools give a short answer with two or three names in it. This guide is about how to be one of them.
How assistants choose who to mention
There is no paid slot. Assistants read what is publicly available: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and articles that mention you, and they summarise it. If your information is thin, inconsistent or vague, you get left out. Not as a punishment; the assistant simply has nothing solid to say about you.
Five things that move the needle
Answer real questions on your site
Write a plain-English page for each question customers actually ask: what you do, where you cover, how quickly, roughly what things cost. Assistants quote businesses that answer questions.
Keep your facts identical everywhere
Name, address, phone and opening hours should match exactly across your site, your Google profile and every directory. Inconsistent facts read as unreliable, to machines and to people.
Collect reviews with detail in them
Ask happy customers to mention the job and the area. 'Fixed our leak in Hangleton the same day' gives an assistant something to work with. Five stars alone does not.
Label your pages so machines can read them
Pages can carry behind-the-scenes labels, called schema, that tell assistants which part is a service, which is a price and which is an answer to a question. Invisible to visitors, and exactly what machines look for.
Check what assistants say about you now
Ask ChatGPT and Google who they would recommend for your kind of business in your town. Note who comes up and why. Check again monthly; the answers change.
What not to pay for
Be sceptical of anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers. There is nothing to buy. The work is making your business the easiest one to recommend, and every part of that work is checkable.

- Is this just SEO with a new name?
- It overlaps. The foundations are the same: clear information, consistent facts, real reviews. The difference is that assistants compose one short answer rather than ranking ten links, so being quotable matters more than being tenth.
- Which assistants matter?
- ChatGPT, Google''s AI answers and voice assistants cover most of it today. The names will change. The habit of asking a tool for a shortlist will not.
